Cabarrubias’s proposal
“Bahala na alkanse ta karon. (Never mind if we operate at a loss for now.) Let’s just wait for that one to be implemented,” said the vice mayor, who is the chairperson of the council’s committee on education.
The move to allow non-residents of the city to enroll in the CCMC College of Nursing is the proposal of Councilor Roberto Cabarrubias. He filed before the council a draft resolution covering the matter.
Cabarrubias’s move came after he learned that the school is losing income because its students are decreasing annually.
Records of the school showed that its nursing students reached 467 in 2005 but dropped to only 191 in 2012.
The school earned P7 million in 2012, but it had earned some P10 to P12 million in the previous years.
Cheaper alternative
During their recent regular session, the legislative body has decided to table (not approved as earlier reported) Cabarrubias’s resolution.
So the enrollees of the CCMC College of Nursing will increase without allowing non-residents to enroll, Councilor Jose Daluz III wants the City to actively market the school to attract more students.
“I believe that (marketing) is what’s lacking,” he said.
Daluz believes the City’s College of Nursing is easy to market considering that it is cheaper compared to other colleges and universities in the city.
Aside from that, the City has its own hospital where the students can have a hands-on experience in providing health services to the city’s constituents.
